Many of our Commercial users have requested documentation on how they take advantage of the multi-brand styling features to allow them to adjust the FocusOPEN user interface for each of their brands. In response to this and also to assist those who only need to style a single brand also, we have released an in-depth guide that explains how to modify all of the FocusOPEN styling from basic logo changes through CSS modifications and also including advanced topics like custom home pages or using the All.inc JavaScript include files introduced in FocusOPEN 3.4.2.

The PDF: FocusOPEN Styling and Branding: A Guide for Designers can be downloaded, free of charge, from the FocusOPEN Wiki.

One feature of FocusOPEN that not many users are aware exists is the click and drag selection of assets in the admin area. If you’re familiar with Photoshop, you will be used to its layer selection tool where you can click and drag to select a whole series of layers very quickly. The FocusOPEN admin area has a similar capability (from version 3.4.1 onwards).

Go to Admin > Manage Assets > View Asset List

Then click and drag on a range of assets:

You can de-select assets this way also and it works with the admin view thumbnails on or off:

Once you have selected a range of assets, you can use the batch menu to do something with them:

This feature can save busy administrators a lot of time by avoiding the need to individually click every single asset you want to select. Like all FocusOPEN features, the click and drag selection works with older legacy browsers so all users should be able to access it.

One of the new features introduced in FocusOPEN 3.4.2 are customisable home pages. We have now released a custom home page development kit. This can be used by client-side developers to generate their own home page templates. The crucial difference between custom home pages and the ‘Custom HTML’ feature already provided older versions of FocusOPEN is the ability to define an editing User Interface (UI) which non-technical administrators can use to update the content. Over 13 different home page widgets are provided:

Custom HTML

Image/Flash Tile

Text Field

Thumbnail

Preview Plug-In (e.g. video player)

Asset Thumbnail

Asset Bitmap Group

Featured Categories

Get Remote URL Content

Anchor/Hyperlink

Text Area

Asset ID

Calendar

The custom home page feature makes extensive use of the FocusOPEN API to transport data from the server to the client-side. Custom home pages are fully compatible with FocusOPEN’s multi-brand capabilities and you can mix and match unique templates across brands so each brand has their own individual home page.

Over the next few months we plan to introduce some more downloadable templates that can be used to expand the range of home page presentation options available. To find out more, read the Wiki article: http://www.digitalassetmanager.com/wiki/custom-homepage-guide/

Today we published a short PDF guide to the FocusOPEN scripting engine and REST API (which is built using the scripting engine). A number of pre-written API functions have been provided over the last few releases and we intend to extend these over forthcoming updates. The documentation explains how to write your own custom scripts that can be called via the REST API either within FocusOPEN (from the home page or preview plug-ins) or externally from third party applications, including the token based user and session authentication that the API uses. The FocusOPEN scripting engine has been provided using another open source tool called Jint (JavaScript Interpreter for .NET).
